The Program strives to retain natural breeding practices as much as possible because, as a landrace breed, the Lhasa Apso has benefited from contributions by its environment and Tibetan culture. Retaining these contributions is consistent with the Program's intention to remain true to the Gompa Lhasa Apso's heritage. Management for the survival and recovery of populations requires three processes: defining management objectives and concerns, monitoring and analyzing population trends, and formulating and implementing management actions. Goals and objectives have been established for the Program, along with an extensive Database designed to provide a comprehensive set of health and physical characteristics data for future study and analysis. The breeding strategy for the program utilizes the principles of population genetics, rather than selection toward a written description of how the breed should appear. Selection criteria for breeding decisions include the age of the dog, parentage and grand-parentage diversity and health characteristics such as eyes and sound patellas. |
